Red Wine
90% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera, Colorino & Merlot
Castello di Fonterutoli has been the heart and soul of the Marchesi Mazzei story and wine-production for nearly 600 years. Owned by the family since 1435 the estate still retains its original form, that of a tranquil country village, surrounded by 650 hectares of wood, vineyards and olive groves.  The grapes are handpicked from 5 different vineyard sites ranging in elevation from 220m-550m above sea level.  After fermentation the wine is put into a mix of 225l and 500l barrels, around 40% of which is new oak, and is aged for 12 months.
On the nose the wine is bright and fresh, cherries and raspberries are apparent upfront but behind there is more complex aromas of thyme and a subtle smoky character.  A well-proportioned, elegant body, the palate has plenty of dark berry and fresh spice flavours.  The mouthfeel is silky with light tannins and an intense, smooth taste.  Lengthy on the finish too.
Food pairing:  Secondi Piatti (BBQ’ed Tuscan Sausage and chicken skewers)
